Core values

The values of the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) form the basis of coexistence in Germany. Every citizen has the opportunity to freely choose his religion, actively shape the local community and participate in political life.

Religion and religious communities

The vast majority of people in Germany are Christians. Christian values and holidays therefore shape life in Germany. But also other religions play a role in our society.

Basic Law ("Constitution")

The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) has been the "Constitution" (Verfassung) of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 and contains the legal foundations of the state. The Basic Law also lists the fundamental rights that stand above all other laws. The inviolability of human dignity, human rights and the freedom of the individual are fundamental principles of the Basic Law. On the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), you can find a booklet as well as videos about the Grundgesetz in several languages.

Freedom of expression

Every human being is allowed to express his opinion freely in Germany. The Basic Law, for example, protects freedom of the press as well as the right to demonstrate. Insults or invoking hate are forbidden. Videos in several languages can be found here. Find videos about freedom of expression in Germany on the BAMF website.

Prohibition of discrimination

Equality before the law means that every human being is treated according to the same valid laws. A person may not be discriminated against in court or in any other area of life, e.g. because of his age, status, origin or faith. Find videos about the prohibition of discrimination in Germany on the BAMF website.

Gender equality

Women and men have equal rights in Germany, i.e. they have equal rights in all areas of life. The Basic Law stipulates that the state must counteract any unequal treatment. Find videos about gender equality in Germany on the BAMF website.

Freedom of faith

Faith and religion are important for many people. The Basic Law regulates freedom of faith, conscience and religious and ideological belief. State and religion are separate in Germany. Find videos about freedom of faith in Germany on the BAMF website.

Protection of marriage and the family

In Germany, many different family and partnership models are normal. Whether single parents or homosexual couples with children, the Basic Law protects the non-violent upbringing of children and defines the parents' duty of care, regardless of the individual family model. Find videos about the protection of marriage and the family on the BAMF website.
